Home Sweet Home

  Jul 30, 2018  |  #Travel

As you may know from my Instagram, I’m back home in Rhode Island for the week. We actually dealt with a lot of frustration in getting here! Long story short, we were supposed to fly out last Monday night. The flight was delayed, then got cancelled, we got home at 1am, our bags never came back to charlotte with us and we ended up flying out Wednesday morning. It was a disaster. But, we made it!

And the morning flight was so much smoother with Cam and everything. I will always choose a morning flight over a night flight from now on. Ok, rant over.

Being home is just so so nice. It’s amazing to have extra help with Cam so I can sleep a little more. I love showing her where I’ve grown up. We’ve taken walks around the neighborhood, introduced her to Lucy (my parents dog), dipped her feet in and took her swimming in our pool, walked out to the dock and showed her the bay and introduced her to friends and family.

I just feel at peace when I come home.

We have eaten lots of Rhode Island-y food, like clam cakes, chowder, lobster rolls, fish and chips and dough boys (basically, fried dough + powdered sugar). We got all of this from Iggy’s, for the locals.

We’ve watched the sunset and had slow mornings on the porch looking at the water with lots of coffee.

We just relaxed the first few days here. It took us (and Cam) a few days to recover from our travel woes. On Friday, we drove to Boston in the afternoon to see some friends. One of Ed’s best friends is Cam’s godfather, and we wanted to introduce her to him finally! They live just outside the city so we didn’t have to worry about city parking or anything – that would have been stressful. Are any of you from Boston? If so, I’m jealous. We stopped at Tatte bakery and brought a bunch of desserts/pastries, including these chocolate peanut butter cookie things. SO GOOD.

On Saturday night, we went to a wedding in Newport for one of my good childhood friends. It was a beautiful ceremony and so nice to get out for the night while my parents babysat Cam. We did a dry run earlier in the week of them doing her bedtime routine, and I think that really helped put me at ease a little more.

Wedding shenanigans.

And the wedding had an ice cream truck, so for dessert, we had wedding cake and ice cream bowls. Perfect if you ask me.

On Sunday, we had some good friends come over with their two year old. It was a good forecast into what’s to come as Camryn grows up. She was so well behaved. My dad made us pizza on the grill.

We also took Cam swimming for the first time and she enjoyed it. I can’t wait to start swim lessons with her at 6 months! I can’t find our exact color, but we have this brand for her float (affiliate link).

We’re here for a few more days so I’m hoping to just soak in more of this time and weather – it’s nice to be away from the Charlotte humidity.

What do you love about being home?

Did you take swim lessons as a kid?

  1. That is so nice that you and Ed got a night out to attend your friend’s wedding without having Cam in tow. Also definitely going to have to keep an ice cream truck in mind when I get married. So cool!

What I love about being home is being able to go and get my favorite foods that I can’t get in New Jersey.

  2. Looks like such a nice area! It seems like your parents have been able to see Cam so much already- I’m sure they love it! Do you think you would ever move back??

    1. We’ve been lucky – Cam has been able to see both sets of grandparents often enough! Not sure if it’ll be this easy after summer is over 🙁 I love visiting Rhode Island, but I love living in Charlotte.

  3. Looks like a great trip! Flight issues are so annoying. I had problems getting home from Florida a few weeks ago and all I could think about was how much harder it would be to deal with all that with a baby. Flying in general with a baby sounds so stressful!

  4. Ah so wonderful to be home. And so wonderful to have some time out just you and Ed. I definitely want an ice cream truck at my wedding. Decided.

Enjoy the last few days! I mean, those sunsets though…..

  5. I didn’t take swim lessons as a kid, but I totally wish I had! I took one in college, and it was a total game changer for me. The lobster roll looks great! I had my first one today, actually, and I can’t believe I missed out on them for so long. So delicious.

    Have a great week!

  6. I have lived in New England my whole life. I don’t think I will ever be able to call anywhere else home. I just don’t feel right or at ease in any other place! I didn’t take swim lessons until I was an adult, but I am so glad I did. It made a huge difference in my confidence and ability to enjoy the water!

    1. What part of New England, Jenny? It is SO beautiful up here, no where else compares in terms of experiencing all the seasons, in my opinion.

  7. Ugh flight troubles are the worst. But glad you made it home safely! The peanut butter chocolate cookie things look delicious. And an ice cream truck at the wedding? I’m a fan.
