A delicious, flavorful twist on your original turkey burger. These patties are chock full of protein, Vitamin A, B vitamins and are a great replacement for your typical beef burger.

Good morning! I hope your week is off to a great start!!

Just popping in today to share one of my newest recipe obsessions. Imagine a tender, juicy burger, full of Vitamin A and antioxidants, and poppin’ with fiber. It doesn’t sound like your average burger, does it? I’m linking up with Annmarie, Farrah, Esther, + Jess today!

Because it’s not your average burger.

Let me tell you about my love for burgers. I’m a burger gal. Growing up, I can remember going to the same sports Bar (Dave’s Bar and Grille, for those of you wondering) after little league games and ordering the cheeseburger every time. I just love the combination of juicy meat and melted cheese.  Invite me to a cookout and I’ll choose the burger over the hot dog every time.

Now that I’ve entered the nutrition world and expanded my knowledge about food and the health benefits, I don’t eat beef burgers as much, but I still love the idea of a burger. Luckily in the food blogging world, the ideas are endless and I’m inspired by a new combination daily. My go to burgers now are black bean burgers, turkey burgers, salmon burgers, or mini tuna burgers.

I’m somewhat flabergasted that I haven’t shared a turkey burger recipe on the blog yet, considering I make them all the time in this house. Ed is nodding his head in agreement…

You may be surprised to learn that sweet potatoes mesh really well into anything. If you can’t tell by my recipe page, I love these suckers and can pretty much find a way to incorporate them into everything.

So, to make these, you’ll want to first cook your sweet potato. I actually prefer the microwave method for cooking the sweet potatoes because it makes the flesh and skin nice and soft, which you want for these patties. Normally, when I’m eating sweet potatoes or sweet potato fries, I prefer crisp skin and slightly blackened fries, but not for these guys. Just trust me.

Once you have your cooked sweet potato, mash it on in with the ground turkey and spices, spreading that flavor and texture all around. Then, you’ll cook them for about 4-5 minutes on each side, and before you know it, dinner will be served.

Now, let’s talk toppings. Toppings can really transform a burger from average to unbelievable, or it could work the other way and overpower the burger taste and flavor. I’m sure you have your own preferences and likes for toppings as well – that’s half the fun of making and eating a burger, isn’t it?!

I pretty much always want sauteed onions and roasted peppers because they just impart so much flavor, their texture is perfect and bonus, they give extra nutrients!
Since I still had cilantro left over from this recipe, I decided why not add it to the burgers? It’s difficult to describe the flavor of cilantro (Fresh, minty?), but you’ll know it’s there when you taste it. And I always 110% suggest adding avocado for the taste and those healthy fats.

  1. I really love burgers too! I love the ketchup/mustard combo with pickles. I guess I’m a classic kind of girl when it comes to burgers!
I make turkey burgers a lot but my recipes are never creative like this. Definitely going to try it out soon.

  2. Well I really don’t think I need to express how jazzed I am about this recipe. You and me both know using sweet potato makes EVERYTHING better. Still though, I can’t believe how simple these are. The sweet potato takes the place of the need for any egg or breadcrumbs eh!? That’s ah-mazzzinnggg. And thanks for adding ginger. Ginger and sweet potato are pretty much soul mates.
Good one girl. Can’t wait to make these.

  3. I MAKE THESE ALL THE TIME!!! The combo of turkey and sweet potato and/or butternut squash is just truly heaven on earth!!!!!!! It also reminds me of THANKSGIVING!

  4. I made these last night and the family thought they were delicious! Great recipe. I’m happy to have leftovers for my lunch today too!
