This beetroot banana smoothie is really helping my smoothie intake go way up in the spring and summer.

Something about warm weather makes me crave these cold, refreshing beverages more. That’s why I have a roundup of my favorite greek yogurt smoothies for inspiration.

This tropical raw beet smoothie meets all of the refreshing smoothie criteria.

If you’re someone who doesn’t know how to include beets in your diet, a beetroot banana smoothie is a great starting point!

Whether it be as a post workout snack or a meal in itself with all the toppings, this banana beetroot and spinach smoothie should be on your rotation.

Beet Banana Smoothie Ingredients

The next time you’re thinking about beetroot smoothie ideas, remember this beet smoothie recipe.

  • frozen banana – provides a natural source of sweetness
  • frozen mango
  • 1 medium beetroot (or 1/2 cup canned beets)
  • almond milk (I used vanilla)
  • vanilla extract
  • spinach or kale
  • honey or maple syrup optional – provides some additional sweetness and disguises some of the beet flavors
  • Coconut chips – optional (for topping)

To keep your banana beet smoothie vegan, go for maple syrup and omit the honey.

Smoothies with frozen fruit and greens are my favorite kinds of smoothies because you’re getting so many antioxidants and polyphenols in there. Great for overall health.

Plus, they can be so fruity and refreshing!

Unlike my greek yogurt smoothies, this beet pre workout smoothie is a wonderful option BEFORE a run or workout.

Since this beet mango smoothie is lower in protein, your muscles can use the glucose more quickly and efficiently for exercise.

How To Make This Beet Spinach Smoothie

This vegan beet smoothie recipe couldn’t get any easier.

Just add all of your ingredients to a high speed and powerful blender (I highly love and recommend the Ninja) and press start.

Add fun toppings, like coconut chips, fruit, maple cinnamon granola, nuts/seeds or raisins if you like.

There isn’t a ton of protein in this beet smoothie recipe, so if you wanted to have it as a meal replacement or just a protein-packed snack, you could easily add a scoop of greek yogurt or protein powder

I think vanilla protein powder would be your best bet, to really make sure you don’t mask the tropical flavors.

Nutrition in Beet Mango Smoothie

The beetroot banana smoothie benefits are endless. More about the nutrition of beets here.

Not only are you getting all the phytonutrients and fiber from the beets, but the spinach is adding additional Vitamin A, Vitamin K and folate, promoting healthy cells.

And not to mention the ample Vitamin C from the mango will keep your immune system strong through this allergy season!

Unlike juices, which extract all of the fiber, smoothies are great ways to get nutrients in and keep the fiber.

Out of an ingredient? This beet banana smoothie can be really forgiving and easy to make substitutions with.

Don’t have spinach? Use kale! Or omit the greens completely.

You can also use fresh bananas and mango, rather than frozen. But, I would recommend adding ice if you do so.

FAQs and Tips

Can you use fresh beets in smoothies?

Definitely. I love using fresh beets in smoothies because it decreases their messiness, compared to cooking or baking with them. Plus you still get all the nutritional benefits!

However, if you prefer not to use fresh beets, you can make a canned beet smoothie recipe just as easily. You can use about 1/2 a cup of canned beats.

Smoothies with beets and spinach may not sound very enticing, but trust me, not only is this beet banana smoothie full of nutrients, but it’s extra tasty and you can’t even taste the spinach.

Can you use beet greens in smoothies?

Yes, don’t waste them! They are full of several nutrients, like Vitamin C, Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Rather than a kale spinach beet smoothie, you could totally substitute the spinach or kale for beet greens if you so choose to reduce food waste.

I had a bunch of beets from our recent CSA and figured I’d try my hand at putting them in a smoothie. I’ve seen it done before, but I always doubted the power of a liquified beet taste. It came out so good!

And c’mon – you can’t deny the power of a beautiful smoothie color, like this banana turmeric smoothie. It turns on your taste buds a little bit more, am I right?

We’ve been pretty conscious about including more beets for running, especially since we’re an avid running household and they have some advantageous benefits on enhancing blood flow for a race day nutrition plan too.

  1. What a great smoothie! How fun to add beets! I’ve never done that in a smoothie! But it looks SO good! Thanks for sharing and I hope that you have a great week!
    xoxo Cailee!

  2. Great combo and it looks amazing! Beets always make my heart skip a beet. Thank you for linking up with us for Meatless Monday!

  3. My goodness, so much gorgeousness in one picture! Im not a huge fan of beets unless they are juiced or in a smoothie, and I also hate having to cut them. I spiralized one once and got red stains EVERYWHERE. Apparently Im not very clean in the kitchen lol

  4. Oh yesss! Cannot wait to make this. I’m not a smoothie person, but definitely the warm weather will bring in a few smoothie bowls. And I’ve always wanted to try beets in one, so this is perfect. Do you cook the beet or dice it up raw?? Also – your pics are looking fab.

Love what you did with the title there… you clever gal.

  5. I used to add beets to my smoothies but then got lazy about having to peel them because they can be so messy! But once it warms up here I will be craving smoothies again so I will need to give this a try!

  6. Yum, so many fruit servings in one go!! Frozen mango is a very favorite of mine. It tastes a lot like ice creams!
I’ve been craving smoothies more often in this heat too. Especially after a run!
